Holy Demon Army (Kawada & Taue) vs. Can-Am Express (Danny Kroffat & Doug Furnas) 20/7/1995

Kawada & Taue's first title defense! Kroffat and Furnas are already 5-time All-Asia tag title holders, but can they win the big one? They are certainly below Kawada and Taue on the card, but they should provide them with enough of a challenge to make this match entertaining. To provide context, in the 94 Real World Tag League round robin tournament, Kawada and Taue placed second out of ten teams, while Kroffat and Furnas placed fifth.

The dastardly gaijin jump the champs before the bell even rings, and Kroffat hits Kawada with a Tiger Driver as soon these two get some time together. The Can-Am Express are looking to catch their opponents off-guard and end this early. As soon as the pace slows down a bit, Kawada manages to outwrestle Kroffat and lands some stiff kicks. After a few minutes of the two teams trading blows equally, Taue decides he's had enough when he catches Kroffat at ringside. He throws him hip-first on a table twice and, once he gets in the ring, awkwardly hits a sort-of tossing Brainbuster, Kroffat landing straight on his shoulder and elbow, ouch. Holy Demon Army work on Kroffat, who eventually escapes with a Superkick and an Enzuigiri.

Furnas gets the hot tag and momentarily cleans house. He hits a Frankensteiner for a 2 count but he hurts his quadricep performing the move and his momentum is stalled. Holy Demon Army capitalize by targeting Furnas' hurt leg. A tag to Kroffat sees the Can-Am Express get some offense in, but they are cut off when Kroffat goes for a desparation Tiger Driver and Taue reverses into a Nodowa Otoshi. Furnas breaks the pin and results in the funniest accidental spot ever, Taue kicks and then knees Furnas right in the butt to send him out of the ring.

The Can-Am Express start attacking with real urgency now and they manage to get some good offense on the champs. Kawada reverses an attempted Frankensteiner into a Powerbomb, but only gets a two! Furnas pulls an Uno Reverse card and a second Powerbomb attempted is reversed into a Frankensteiner! Taue comes in to save Kawada from a Tiger Driver and gets massive boos. Makes sense, Holy Demon Army shouldn't need interference and dirty tactics to win this one. A Superkick to Taue allows Kroffat to hit the Tiger Driver, but Taue breaks the pin making the crowd jeer again.

Thanks to Taue's interference, Holy Demon Army regain control and look for the winning move to put Kroffat away. Nodowa Otoshi off the apron denied, off the top rope denied, Nodowa Otoshi-Backdrop combination denied, stereo Nodowa Otoshi to Furnas and Backdrop to Kroffat, but Kroffat kicks out at two. Finally, a Nodowa Otoshi off the top rope ends the match and the champs retain.

Easy defense for Holy Demon Army, they weren't really challenged despite the challengers putting up a good fight, especially towards the end. Can't really recommend this one, it seems lacking in both storyline drama and exciting in-ring action. It's still a good and enjoyable match, but there are so many better matches out there. Only watch this if you're a big Can-Am Express mark.
